Rolex Explorer & Explorer II: Models, Value and Selling

The Explorer is the understated adventurer of the Rolex range: clean, legible and purpose-built. The Explorer II adds a 24-hour hand and date for cavers and explorers. Both have devoted followings and are watches we are glad to buy in Sydney.

This page outlines the Explorer variations and what drives value. For a private, no-obligation assessment, request a valuation or call 0485 511 177.

Explorer variants we buy

The Explorer is offered in Oystersteel and, more recently, Rolesor, in 36mm and 40mm cases with the signature 3-6-9 dial. The Explorer II is the larger, more technical sibling, with a fixed 24-hour bezel and a 24-hour hand, in black or white ('Polar') dials.

We buy current and earlier references, as well as vintage Explorers, where dial originality and condition can be decisive.

What drives Explorer value

Reference, size and configuration lead, followed by condition and completeness. The Polar Explorer II and certain vintage references carry particular appeal.

Box, papers and service history support the result. Every Explorer is reviewed by an independent horologist before any figure is discussed.

FAQs

Common questions, straight answers.

Is the Polar (white) Explorer II more desirable?
The white-dial 'Polar' Explorer II has a strong following, though desirability also depends on reference, condition and completeness. We assess each watch individually.
Do you buy vintage Explorers?
Yes. For vintage Explorers, dial originality and overall condition are especially important, and we review each example carefully.
Do I need the box and papers?
No. We buy watches with full sets, partial sets and watch-only examples. Original box and papers can support the assessment, but their absence does not prevent a sale.
When do I get paid?
Once your watch is inspected and approved, payment is made the same day. Cleared funds are transferred to your nominated account before the watch leaves your possession.
Who inspects the watch?
Every watch is reviewed by a professional, independent horologist rather than a salesperson, who assesses authenticity, condition and completeness before any offer is finalised.
Is the process private?
Yes. We work strictly by appointment and never publicly list your watch or circulate your personal details. Discretion is central to how we operate.

Thinking of selling your Explorer?

Send your watch details and photos. We usually respond within 24 hours with a clear price indication. If accepted after inspection, cleared payment is made before handover.
